When did Old Orchard Shopping Center open?

Built by Marshall Field and Company at a cost of nearly $20 million, Old Orchard Shopping Center opened in 1956.  The unprecedented open-air mall housed a Marshall Field Department store with 285,00 square feet of retail shopping space, as well as many other stores including: The Fair, S.S. Kresge, Walgreens, The Country Cobbler, John M. Smyth Company, Montgomery Ward and Co., Krochs and Brentano’s Book store, and C.D. Peacock Jewelry Company.
