Was Skokie the world’s largest Village?
On June 26, 1962, the Skokie Village Board adopts a proclamation citing Skokie as the "World's Largest Village”. At the time, its population surpassed Oak Park, also a community using the village form of government, by 4,200.
This proclamation was a reflection of the tremendous growth of the community. Skokie’s population grew from 7,000 residents in 1940 to over 59,000 by 1960. And, by 1969, its population would reach 68,322.
